Columbia River Basin

Central focus of our research and one of the most ecologically and economically important watersheds in the Pacific Northwest

Stretching from British Columbia through Washington and Oregon to the Pacific Ocean, the basin supports diverse fish and wildlife populations, including several ESA-listed salmon and steelhead. Its estuaries, tributaries, and reservoirs provide critical breeding and foraging habitat for piscivorous waterbirds such as Caspian terns, double crested cormorants, and American white pelicans. By studying these areas, we gain insight into how bird predation affects juvenile salmonids and evaluate management strategies that help maintain healthy ecosystems and sustainable fisheries.
