High count during the week of 115 Caspian terns, including about 13 active nests and 13 chicks, on the Tule Lake tern island in Sump 1B, Tule Lake NWR, California; on August 4th there appeared to be another predation event at the Tule Lake colony, resulting in depredation of all the remaining tern chicks on the island (predator not seen); despite the prevalence of multiple nest predators (i.e., great horned owls and raccoons) on the Tule Lake tern island during the 2013 breeding season, hundreds of adult Caspian terns and fledgling Caspian terns from other colonies continue to roost on or near the island; high counts this week of 35 ring-billed gulls and 11 California gulls also observed on the island; ring-billed gulls also nested in small numbers on the island
